Shri Khatu Shyam Temple, Rajasthan
Khatu Shyam Temple (Rajasthani/Hindi: खाटू श्याम मंदिर) is a Hindu temple situated in Khatoo village in the Sikar district of the Indian State of Rajasthan. It is a pilgrimage site for worshipping the deity Krishna and Barbarika who is often venerated as a Shyam Baba. Devotees believe the temple houses the head of Barbarika or Khatu-Shyam, a legendary warrior who sacrifices his head upon the request of Krishna during the antebellum of the Kurukshetra War.
Khatu Shyam Ji temple, located in the Sikar district of Rajasthan, is an important place of Indian culture. This temple is a symbol of the faith of the people today and holds an important place in Hinduism. Khatu Shyam Ji is worshipped as Lord Shri Krishna, and due to its mythological importance, lakhs of devotees come here every year.
The temple of Khatu Shyam Ji is more than 1000 years old and was built in the ancient period of Indian history. This temple was constructed during the Mahabharata period when a warrior named Barbarika was worshipped as Khatu Shyam Ji. Barbarika, also known as Khatu Shyam Ji, was a great warrior during the times of Mahabharata. He was famous for his amazing archery skills for defeating his enemies during the Mahabharata war.
As the son of Ghatotkach and the grandson of Bhima, Barbarika was known for his exceptional skills and unique abilities. The three Abodh Baans (arrows) obtained by Barbarika also made him unique. These Abodh Baans (arrows) had such power that they were capable of hitting any target and would return after missing their target.
When the Mahabharata war was announced, Barbarika asked his mother for permission to join the war. His mother allowed him to join the army but advised Barbarika to fight with the weaker side in the war. This advice eventually led to his recognition as a divine being who would support the downtrodden and the helpless, earning him the name Hare Ka Sahara.
The temple’s history is not just confined to its ancient origins but also includes various renovations and enhancements carried out over the centuries. The present structure of Shree Khatu Shyam Mandir reflects a blend of traditional and modern architectural styles, making it a marvel to behold and a significant cultural landmark in Rajasthan.
