Hanuman Garhi Ayodhya

Hanuman Garhi Temple is a Hindu temple of Hanuman in Uttar Pradesh, India. Located in Ayodhya, it is one of the most important temples in the city along with other temples such as Ram Mandir and Nageshwar Nath. This shrine is under the charge of Bairagi Mahants of Ramanandi Sampradaya and Nirvani Akhara.

There are many legends about the origin of this temple. One of the legends is that the temple was built in the 10th century by Jagat Singh, the brother of King Vikramaditya. According to folklore, this temple was built by Saint Tulsidas after he was refused entry into Ayodhya due to his low-caste status. He prayed to Lord Hanuman and was granted permission to establish a temple outside the city. Legend has it that the temple stands on the spot where Lord Hanuman used to meditate. It is believed that the hill on which the temple was built was known as 'Sumeru Parvat'.

According to folklore, once, one monkey from a group fell into a cave. When the others went inside the cave to rescue him, they found a small idol of Lord Hanuman inside. The idol was placed it on the hill and the hill came to be known as Hanuman Garhi. It is also believed that the temple was constructed with a series of steps leading up to the main entrance to prevent elephants from entering the temple. Many poets like Rahim, Keshavdas, and Bihari Lal have written about the place.
